Mary Corbet's Needle 'n Thread - Tips, Tricks & Great Resources for Hand Embroidery

Stitch Play Sampler

Okay Kathy,

Here goes:

This is what I think I'm going to use as a framework for Mary's Stitch Play Series. I didn't get this posted last night because I found out that you couldn't post a pdf file. Jpegs only. So I took a picture of my draft sketch and uploaded it. I figure the boxes on the left side can either be stitched in a diagonal pattern, or can be saved for future straight line stitches.

First, I have to rip out my first attempt which was an attempt to stitch "Whipping 2 Rows of Chain Stitch" in a circle. (Count on me to complicate something simple. ;))

Then I think I'll make a book out of it, kind of like what we did with the Nesting Place class, only instead of using felt for holding needles, I'll add sampler pages later for other stitches that get added.

Still thinking that part through though. :D

Want to stitch one with me? We can personalize it by using the inside of the boxes.

Re: Stitch Play Sampler

how fun! What is the first photo -- is that printed on vellum? How would we put the pages inside of it? A few weeks ago, I pulled out something that I made in girl scouts. We cut some fabric and sewed it together and it is a flip book of sorts with different stitches on each piece. Yours is much more sophisticated! I'm on the same wave length with you..... Tell me the details and I can try to get the supplies and throw this in the WIP basket. It would be fun.

Re: Stitch Play Sampler

Hi Kathy,

I'm so glad you want to join in - this will be fun!

This will definitely be sewing by the seat of our pants...

(So to speak.)

What I mean by that is that I tried to make a flexible design that could be easily altered to new stitches as they are added.

The photo at the top is my draft on Microsoft Word, and it's all grayed out like that because the original is colored into a mossy green the color of my fabric stretched out on the bottom. However, my color printer wasn't working, so I used the regular printer which spit it out in mid-gray. The finished size is 8" x 10 1/2", and folded, the front cover would be about 5 1/8" x 8" with a 1/2" for a spine.

This is probably exactly like your flip book from Girl Scouts.

The fabric I have on here is maybe not the best fabric for the project, but it's the one I think I'm going to use anyway. So that being said, you could probably pick any counted fabric. I'm finding I prefer a finer count of fabric.

This one that is pictured in the second photo is Weeks Dye Work, 30 count, 'tho I can't remember what the official color is. We'll see how it works out. I tried Cotton Floche on it, and it seems to be working out okay. I think one strand of DMC floss would be too thin looking on it, and six-strands unstranded might be too big.

Would love other suggestions though if anyone has some.

Anyone else want to join Kathy and I on this?

I'll see if I can email the PDF file to Mary if there is someway to make it available for anyone who wants to download it. I threw it together so there shouldn't be any copyright issues.

whoot whoot! Ok. I don't know where to get fabric like you have. Can I take the supply list to Joann's or Hobby Lobby (chain craft store) to get fabric for it? Do you think muslin or broad cloth would work? Thank you putting this together. I plan for this project to be fun stitchin!

Re: Stitch Play Sampler

This is beautiful, fun, portable for summer and absolutely PERFECT! I have been turning through the needlebook pages from class, trying to come up with ideas for it-and you, lovely, have hit the nail on the head!! (I'm still looking for a scissor case and tassels. Hazel Blomkamp makes ah-ma-zing tassels. But, I digress).

Let me know how you are able to get the design up, you may have to email it. I can always ask my tech to see if I can add a special page on my blog, if you don't want it public, to link here on. I add private sign ins for different things a lot with other business stuff, so it's a thought.

What a fun idea! You two will have to come see the blog early this week for what my husband calls crazy zamboni embroidery. :) do y'all remember Snoopy driving the zamboni? Well, my results look like it! Heheheh.

Can't wait! Any specs Shelia, on how many pages for ground fabric? That kind of thing? I like to try different threads so maybe that can be part of it with the needle type and thread for each practice area...I have a ton of 5 cotton perle and could send some skeins out for trying stitches with too. Let me know how I can help-this looks great!

Re: Stitch Play Sampler

Hi - I am very new to the Needle 'n Thread blog (see my first post "Stitch Samples" on the 21st June in Needlework Help Q @A) and I come upon the above post where you are discussing making a sampler for your Stitch Play projects. I was wondering how you are all getting on with your project and would love to see an update. I am currently starting to try out the various stitches that Mary has made on You Tube and will put these in a folder - as per Mary's suggestion - but am interested also in doing some of the Stitch Play projects.

Re: Stitch Play Sampler

Hi Daffodil Fairy (Oriel),

We haven't started yet. The end of the school year sort of put us behind, and we're kind of slow getting this project off the ground. Kathy, Brynn and I are talking about getting it started in the next two weeks. We're still selecting fabric, and I've got a pdf file with a clean black and white design to clean up with the pattern. I'll send that to Mary as soon as that happens (probably the end of the first week of July) and see if there's anywhere she can post it if others would like to participate.

It would be great to have you join the fun along with us.

(This invitation also goes out to anyone else who would like to play along!) All stitchers are welcome.

Hi Shelia
Look forward to seeing the pattern and what fabric you are going to use and hopefully Mary will be able to post it on needlenthread. I have just 'discovered' this site and it is great and I am looking forward to learning heaps from you all.
Cheers
