I recently discovered a source of hand-dyed silk embroidery floss that doesn't break the bank. An 8.7 yard spool costs $1.65 to $2.00. The solid colors are keyed to DMC colors. There is also a lovely line of variegated flosses.
I finally tried these in a crewel project I am finishing and they are truly lovely. My only complaint is that the strands don't seperate easily when using three strands, but that is easily fixed by doing one at a time and then re-marrying the threads. Vicki Clayton also does hand-dyed fabrics, silk ribbon and silk perle.
