window valance question

I am thinking of making window valances with surface embroidery. Will probably use linen, but am unsure about the best kind of fiber to use considering they will get lots of sun exposure & will need to be washed at least once a year. Silk? Wool -- Fine d'Aubusson? Should I stick with a DMC cotton? Would appreciate any suggestions!

Re: window valance question

Just a thought. Cotton. I have pillow cases and dish towels done by my grandmother over 70 years ago. Some are in really fine condition and the embroidery is still as good as the day she did it.
I'd line the valances, though. Maybe even put in a light blocker fabric as inner facing. That would protect them from fading, if it will work from your design. Anne

Re: window valance question

Thank you so much for these ideas. I never thought of a light blocker fabric -- any thoughts on what would work best? Is there a better option than linen for the ground fabric?
