Transparent effect for wings

I was wondering if anyone knew if it's possible to create a transparent effect for dragonfly wings. Thanks for any ideas you can give me.

Try a shimmery organza or something similar. If you want 3-D wings (standing up from the fabric, you might look up some stumpwork techniques or books. If you want the wings flat on the fabric and embroidered over, then applique them to the fabric and just embroider the edges. You can use a metallic thread for the edges and for the veins in the wings, too, for added effect...
