Today, I thought I’d serve up a very delightful weekend diversion for you.
Over yonder at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, they have this intricately embroidered Mughal coat from the first half of the 1600’s that is quite incredible!
Better yet, if you follow that link, they have a video production about it, wherein you can hear about the discoveries they’ve made while studying it. You can also see the fabulous embroidered motifs close up.
I found the video fascinating, and I hope you do, too.

This is a delightful post, Mary. I’ve been toying with using chain stitch exclusively on a design I’m working on–kind of a contemporary take on traditional crewel images. I really like the visual texture of all-chain-stitch and the closeups of the Mughal coat are inspiring. Food for thought…

That video of the Mughal coat was so inspiring! What beautiful embroidery and design of the animals and flowers! I hope you are not getting an idea to have this as one of your group projects because I repaired a pillow with chain stitching using a needle and it drove me crazy with frustration. I still haven’t finished the Secret Garden project. Maybe one of your emails could include photos of all these great projects you have encouraged us to stitch. The people who are “new” here may not have explored them and I have oh so many gems stitched up. Especially the lavender and bee needle book. I’m so thankful for all you have taught me. WOWOWOW! Thank you so much for sharing about this incredibly extraordinary coat. The detail of the work and the craftsmanship are so very beautiful (and that barely gives it justice) . What a complete delight. I could stare at it for hours and I am actually rather envious of the gal who gets to spend so much time with this magnificent garment!
