It’s been a long time since I’ve posted a free hand embroidery design here on Needle ‘n Thread!
This is my renovated version of a rose medallion (formed as a cross) from an old ecclesiastical embroidery-related publication.
While the design could also be used for secular embroidery – especially if you’re looking for something very symmetrical – the cruciform shape lends itself well to church embroidery.
For church embroidery, this design might be used, for example, on an embroidered pall with Marian theme to it (the rose being one of the many symbols used for the Blessed Virgin), and it could be done in all whitework on white linen, or it could be done in color.
It might be used as a goldwork and silk embroidered cross on the front of the chalice veil, a burse, and so forth, with a set of vestments embroidered in the same theme.
It would also make a nice secular study for silk shading and goldwork. It could be enlarged for a study in soft shading with wool.
There’s a lot you can do with it!
