I learned to embroider when I was a kid, when everyone was really into cross stitch (remember the '80s?). Eventually, I migrated to surface embroidery, teaching myself with whatever I could get my hands on...read more

Embroidery Design – Fleur de Lys Border

Amazon Books

Here’s a free embroidery design for you… You could use it as a very pretty edge on curtains, on a tea cloth, or on a full table cloth. It would look pretty done in white on white, or in a single color on white or cream (deep red or gold on cream would look great!). The Fleur de Lys design is a classic. This would stitch up pretty quickly.

If you’re going to extend the pattern, trace it and overlap the previous design. If you set up your tracing paper with lines, or if you use vellum graph paper, you will get a nice, square image.

For stitching, you could simply employ any basic line stitch. Think of the satisfaction you’ll have as you move quickly through this pretty design!

For threads, you could use cottons, although I think this would be really gorgeous done in a thicker silk twist, like Trebizond silk – but remember to use short lengths of thread. But if you’re expecting to wash the finished product often, you should probably stick with a cotton thread.

Other ideas: Satin stitch the petal shapes. Or make a silk scarf and use this as a design for the ends, couching down gold thread for the design.

If you have any creative ideas about how this design can be used, feel free to share them!

  1. The leaf designs at the bottom of the picture and the ones in the middle but not the ones at the top could be cutworked (is that a word?!?) Thanks for the pattern!

  2. “Cutworked” sounds like a good word to me! Great idea about the leaves. Combining cutwork with the lines and satin stitches at the top would make a nice edge on just about anything. Thanks for your ideas!

  3. Thanks, Mary. I think this will be just the right design for shadow work curtains and lampshades. It should curve around the lampshade nicely, too. Simple, but effective.

  6. Hi,
I’m looking to use this Fleur de Lys pattern for the bottom of a regency ball gown for one of the Jane Austen regency balls I attend. Are you suggesting that I trace this on transferrable paper? I have not done this before. It’s the first time I am getting up the courage to trace and iron. Could you suggest the best tracing paper to use with this and where I can get it. I have embroidered for years, but always with an already stamped pattern.

  9. Thanks for the design! I am making an embroidered wall hanging of a prayer my girls say in school every day. I’ll give them to the teachers. This will be the border at the bottom! I haven’t decided yet it if will be white stitches or a deep red on the brown fabric.
