I learned to embroider when I was a kid, when everyone was really into cross stitch (remember the '80s?). Eventually, I migrated to surface embroidery, teaching myself with whatever I could get my hands on...read more

Goldwork & Metal Thread Flower Tutorial

Amazon Books

Aurélie Clay, who manages the website Brodely, has worked up a very clear tutorial for making a goldwork & metal thread flower. She uses colored purls, couching them in a basketweave pattern, to fill the petals of a simple but beautiful flower. This would be a great technique for making ornaments! I love the the idea, the materials, the whole technique! If you get a chance, check out her tutorial. She’s also selling colored purls on Brodely, if you’re looking for a European resource. I was thinking this technique would work great with Thistle Threads new silk-wrapped purls, too.

Enjoy the tutorial!

  1. Thanks for the link to this great site, which I spent some time browsing. It made me wish that I'd kept up with my French. Maybe someone should offer foreign language courses for embroiderers! I've thought about putting together a glossary of common needlework terms in other languages to assist me when visiting blogs like these or looking at foreign-language embroidery books.

I was thinking that too 😀

I've been having a go at the pink bug needlework nibble this week and am enjoying working with the wiggly worms even though I found them a bit fiddly at first.

  3. Dear Ms. Corbet,

I am of the opinion that yours is the only website that seems to help out no matter what the query is regarding embroidery. I’d say it’s the A-Z website for all embroidery queries! It’s an AMAZING & FANTASTIC job, what you have achieved here. Hat’s off, really!!!

You have been a big help to one such as me, who likes to learn by myself.

Your endless energy in running and upkeep of this website describes the zest and passion you have for hand embroidery.

    God bless and best regards,
    Mrs. Arathy Foerster
