I learned to embroider when I was a kid, when everyone was really into cross stitch (remember the '80s?). Eventually, I migrated to surface embroidery, teaching myself with whatever I could get my hands on...read more

Portuguese Whitework – Book Winner Announced

Amazon Books

We started the week with this give-away of Yvette Stanton’s new book, Portuguese Whitework. Today, let’s end the week with a winner, shall we?

Portuguese Whitework by Yvette Stanton

Lovely, isn’t it?! This biscornu is one of the projects from the book. So many possibilities for this type of whitework – I just love it!

Ok, on with it. I know you’re not here to listen to wistful murmurings!

The winner is Kim McArthur-Navarrette, who contributed this comment:

The beauty of whitework is the embroidery itself, the stitches. It doesn’t depend on color or metallic threads to attract. The purity of white against white, twisted, curved, raised creates its own appeal. Add drawn thread work and I’m hooked. I’ve done whitework with crewel and Hardanger projects. This would be the impetus to try Portuguese. Thank you for your inspiration. I share coffee with you every morning.

Congratulations, Kim! If you’d drop me a line with your mailing address, I’ll get the book on its way as soon as possible.

Thanks to all for participating!

Coming Up on Needle ‘n Thread

Even if you didn’t win this week’s book give-away, never fear. In the spirit of spreading embroidery cheer all over the place, I’ll be giving away about 8 books over the next few months, on varying techniques. So keep an eye out for those. And who knows, you might see another copy of Portuguese Whitework on the menu!

I’ll show you the Medallion Finish on Monday – if I can hold off! The last stitches are going in today. Can I wait until Monday to actually show you? I’m not so sure. But once the stitching’s done, there are a couple more steps to prepare the piece for appliquéing it, and one in particular may be of interest to any needleworker, so I’ll try to photograph the process and share that with you, too.

With the Medallion finished, it’s time to move on! There’s some Stitch Play coming up, and I’ll be unfolding some new projects (not quite so elaborate), techniques, and other do-dads in the weeks to come. Stick with me – it’ll be a blast!

  2. I am looking forward to seeing the finished medallion. And to hearing about how to prep for the applique onto the vestment. I have been wondering about that!

Will we get pics of the finished vestment in due course? 🙂

  3. Congratulations to Kim! …But is it really the finish on Monday!? I can barely believe it. And you can be sure I’m going to be clicking in on Monday bright and early…maybe even checking in before then as well! Please tell us that you are going to sign and date it (hidden on the inside of course) so that future conservators will have a clue! Pieces of this quality can last for centuries and in the millenia to come there is no reason to think anyone will know squat about any of us.-, but they may see this medallion and wonder who? where? how? when or even why?!!!

  4. congratulations kim! it sounds like you are realy going to get some use out of this book. another whitework i enjoy is cutwork. you might have to look for some vintage transfers or books to make your own. you also have to like the buttonhole stitch, but you can get fancy with it by adding picots. it’s fun.
