Monogram Class with Susan O’Connor in NY

Amazon Books

Well, since we’ve been talking about embroidered monograms lately, this is a very timely announcement!

For those of you who will be in the north eastern US this autumn, and who are interested in a face-to-face class in traditional monogramming, you’re in luck…

Monogram Class with Susan O'Connor

In mid-October of this year, Susan O’Connor of Country Bumpkin will be teaching a class in traditional monogramming techniques in Beacon, New York.

Monograms: The Art of Embroidered Letters

Susan is the author of the book Monograms: The Art of Embroidered Letters published by Country Bumpkin some years ago.

Monograms is beautiful book, typical of Country Bumpkin Publications. It’s also an excellent instructional book for anyone wanting to learn the art of traditional monogram techniques. Unfortunately, right now, it is out of print and very hard to come by, but rumor has it that Country Bumpkin is looking into a reprint! So glad to hear it!

In the meantime, though, if you want some good personal instruction in monogramming, you can always go to New York in the autumn. It’s a beautiful area of the country, and a perfect time of the year to be there.

Stumpwork Class with Susan O'Connor

In addition to the monogramming class, there’s a stumpwork class on offer during the same weekend, also taught by Susan.

And for those interested in delving into wool embroidery, there’s a class available for you, too!

Three days of classes over an autumn weekend… what could be more fun?

The classes take place October 18, 19, and 20 at the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon. You can find further details about the classes, including information on tuition fees, kit costs, and accommodations, on the Country Bumpkin website under Events.

  1. Funny you should post this today – I’m heading up there to pick up some work! Beacon is such a pretty town being located in Dutchess County, right next to Orange County in Downstate NY. The view driving over the Hudson River is heartachingly beautiful. The Hudson Highlands is one of this nation’s most scenic areas. I wish that I could take the class just to be a part of those “Aussie Smockers”! But my work schedule barely leave room for me to breathe! Ms. O’Conners work is really lovely. Thank you for this post today.

  2. Dear Mary

It sounds like a really worthwhile course, If only I lived in NY City I would definitely sign up for the class for the traditional monogramming, the photos of the stumpwork and wool embroidery are gorgeous I’d love to sign up for those as well alas I won’t be in NY. Thanks for sharing this information with us.

  4. Imagine my surprise when I saw “Beacon NY” in the article! I live in Beacon! Laura B. is right: it’s heartachingly beautiful here. I will try my hardest to come to this class. I feel it was meant for me!

    1. Oh how I would love to attend the class in Beacon. Harper, I’m green with envy!

Mary, would you be so kind as to direct me to other discussions on Monograms in your wonderful blog site? Sure wish this book was not out of print, but I’ll be keeping my ears open for the day it’s re-released. Gosh I’d love to have a copy.

I’d also love to hear discussion about which threads/stitches to use for particular fabrics, and things like this that a newbie thinks about. I’ve stopped short of doing monograms because of what I don’t know….and we just don’t know what we don’t know ; ).

    2. Oh, wow! I live in Middletown! Can you email me? I’ll ask Mary to pass along my email address! I go there 2X monthly

    3. Yes, Laura! Email me. Mary, if you wouldn’t mind, I give permission to share my email with Laura.

      Thank you!
      Harper

    1. Hola, Lidia,
TendrĂ¡ la oportunidqd para asistir a las classes de Susan en octubre? SerĂ¡ un placer encontrarnos en Beacon, NY!
      Saludos,
      Kathleen (Catalina)

  6. I hope Country Bumpkin do reprint the book. Susan O’Connor does beautiful work, whatever it is. In the meantime I have ordered the Victorian monogram book/magazine you were talking about the other day.

It’s sad that although we live in the same country I have never had the opportunity to go to any of Susan’s classes. I guess the analogy would be someone living in California not being able to get to New York – we live in biiiig countries. But I do hope those of you who can get there have a wonderful time and learn lots.

    1. Yes, Mary, Susan’s classes are wonderful! I attended the Beacon classes last autumn, and have registered for the upcoming classes as well. Only a “short” drive from Wisconsin, but well worth the trip!
