I learned to embroider when I was a kid, when everyone was really into cross stitch (remember the '80s?). Eventually, I migrated to surface embroidery, teaching myself with whatever I could get my hands on...read more

Art Nouveau, Silks, and Color

Amazon Books

On Monday, I promised I’d show you the beginnings of a developing embroidery project.

I love everything about this particular project so far – the Art Nouveau design, the ground fabric, the color choices, and yes, the metal threads that will accent the piece.

Art Nouveau design - colors, threads, fabric

Anna developed this particular design. We started with the color scheme, in fact, before we even had the design finished, and then we started talking about possible types of designs.

I love Art Nouveau and so does Anna, so I set size parameters and we discussed concepts and then she developed the design.

We worked together on the color scheme, and then, looking ahead, we decided we better be in touch with the manufacturers and distributors to make sure we could actually get the threads (silk and gold) that we want to use.

I also selected a gorgeous silk shantung to experiment with, for the ground fabric. It’s in the faintest of egg-shell ivories, and I just love it with the thread colors!

Now that we know we can get the materials – with a bit of a lead time, of course – it’s time to stitch!

We will likely each stitch our own version, as we test the applications and uses of some of the threads.

Nothing like a team effort!

I’ll certainly share progress as we go!

And on that note, I wish you a very pleasant weekend! We’ve got a big old wedding tomorrow, with loads of family in town until Monday. And it just so happens that the Chiefs apparently planned accordingly so that we have an excuse for a big party on Sunday, too. It should be a fun weekend all around!

  1. Oooh I can’t wait!! Just judging by the peak of the design to the right and the threads it looks like it’s going to be so pretty!

    1. Yes, we will give members the first option for purchasing kits. It’s not a stitch-along though. This is a full-fledged, full-kitted project, with instructions.

    1. We’re developing this into a kit. I’ll definitely let folks know when it’s ready, but it usually takes a little time from first stitching to actual production of the kit. We’re planning on it for this year, if we can get all the supplies in a timely enough manner.

  2. Can I put in an advance expression of interest for this project please?
I adore Art Nouveau, a dedicated Morris fan!
The thread colours shown are divine and that little scrap of design peeking in is enough to have me in raptures.
