I learned to embroider when I was a kid, when everyone was really into cross stitch (remember the '80s?). Eventually, I migrated to surface embroidery, teaching myself with whatever I could get my hands on...read more

Goldwork Butterflies for a Good Cause

Amazon Books

Today, I’m presenting you with a different kind of book review.

A Kaleidoscope of Goldwork Butterflies is a project and technique book published by Alison Cole last year. It’s a beautiful book, with beautiful projects in it.

At the same time, it’s a special book. It was published and is being sold to raise funds to support medical research for a condition called NORSE (New Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus), which tragically took the life of Alison’s daughter, Bek, in 2023.

I’m going to let Alison tell us about this, but I’ll be giving you a glimpse of the projects in the book, as well as the instructional content you can expect from it.

As with all of Alison’s books (like Goldwork Masterclass reviewed here and Stumpwork Masterclass reviewed here), the instruction is excellent and the projects are exquisite.

Testing the Sparkle on Little Bits of Embroidery

Good morning! I’ve got a lot to chat with you about in the coming days, as we pull together the projects that we’re working on here in the studio.

My goal this week is to set up the “final” version of a project sample I’ll be stitching over the next couple weeks.

It’s a small, spring-bright, happy project that I want to use to focus on how metallics can be incorporated into hand embroidery projects in a subtle but effective way, to add a little touch of sparkle and life. I showed you some testing for it a little while back.

Color & Sparkle & Cut!

One of the really fun parts of working this job is when a box arrives that we aren’t expecting – or that we aren’t expecting yet. You know, one of those boxes with stuff in it that we haven’t seen before, but that we ordered on good faith that it would be everything we dreamed it would be.

That happened twice last week!

And both times, the boxes had very exciting things in them.

I just don’t know which to show you first…

Making Color Choice Easier

Over the years here on Needle ‘n Thread, we have discussed Much about color in embroidery.

The question of color choice in needlework projects always looms high on the List of Most Frequently Asked Questions, Problems, Difficulties, Quandaries, and So Forth that arrive in my inbox.

When I asked earlier this year about your particular needlework challenges or difficulties you’d like help with, color choice was an oft-repeated request.

Today, I’m going to share a seemingly simple tip. It is, in fact, my #1 tip when it comes to solving color choice issues. I know this tip isn’t really as simple as it sounds. There are so many reasons why it can’t always happen, but when it can happen, it can make your color-choosing-life so much easier.

Tips for Embroidery on 3-D Objects

Today, I wanted to answer a couple questions about embroidering on these 3-dimensional felted hearts that I showed you last week.

The tips below can apply to any similar 3-dimensional object. This is pretty much how I go about embroidering on any pre-felted shapes. In fact, I’ll show you some more explorations of a similar nature in the weeks to come! And share more tips along the way.

But for starters, these two tips answer the majority of questions that arrived in my inbox, so here we go…
