Monogram for Hand Embroidery: Letter S

Amazon Books

Yet another monogram for hand embroidery – the letter “S.” I’ve been posting twice a day, with the intention of getting this whole monogram alphabet online for you – but I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep up the pace! We’ll see. It’s been kind of fun and challenging, anyway! If you’ve liked this monogram alphabet so far, I think you’ll really like the “S.” It’s pretty!

I think I may have given the impression previously that monograms can only be hand embroidered using specialty threads, like coton a broder. Not so, not so! In the next couple weeks, one of my summer embroider classes will begin monogramming a hankie. They’re using DMC stranded cotton, and I’m sure it will turn out just fine! I’ll post photos of the class sample as soon as I work it up!

For the rest of this monogram alphabet, please visit my Index of Monograms for Hand Embroidery. You’ll also find it listed on my Free Hand Embroidery Patterns page!

And so, here’s the S – Enjoy!

  1. Yes, thanks Mary for doing this alphabet for us! I’ve been wondering, however, how would one go about satin stitching that fancy tail on the “S” (assuming that the embroiderer is stitching along the main curve of the S and coming to the tail). I have on order, but haven’t received, the Country Bumpkin publication on monograms that you recommended a little bit ago. Maybe this issue is addressed in that book.

  2. Hi, all – Thanks for the comments!

Hi, Joey! Good question about the tail of the S. For satin stitch, I can see the difficulty, as it seems that any direction would necessarily end up with a long coverage at some section there in the tail. But unless the monogram is stitched “very” large, I think it could still quite easily be managed. I would start with a top left to lower right slant on the lower narrows of the tail, and keep that slant going all the way through the base of the S, and start to compensate around the lower curve of the S around the first vine crossing, going up. The longest section, then, of the satin stitching would be just above the little “bite” in the tail.

Does that make sense? I think at that point, you’d end up with maybe a half inch length on the satin stitch, above the bite, maybe a bit longer. If the stitch is padded, it shouldn’t be a problem at all, as the padding will give the satin stitches something to stick to, and something that helps them lie well.

    Did I explain that ok???!!

  3. I LOVE this 'S'!! I've never done embroidery, but I burned the 'S' onto the lid of a plain wooden box I bought at the craft store, then gave it a couple coats of tinted wood stain. I'm really pleased with the end result and the rest of this alphabet is so gorgeous that I may have to do a few more as gifts!
Thank you so much for posting these!

  6. Hi Mary,
Just wanted to say thank you for your beautiful patterns – your page has been bookmarked 🙂
I don’t actually do embroidery, although I am a keen cross-stitcher, but I have great fun decorating cakes and am going to have a go at reproducing some of your patterns in icing!
I’ve “liked” you on FB and will be sure to link/thank appropriately when I’ve used one of your designs.

  7. I have some monogram patterns from the magazine (in Spanish) Ideas published between 1977 and 1980. I am missing some of the alphabet but have most. If anyone has a source for these, I would appreciate it! Each magazine had a pullout section highlighting one letter of the alphabet in ten different designs.
