I learned to embroider when I was a kid, when everyone was really into cross stitch (remember the '80s?). Eventually, I migrated to surface embroidery, teaching myself with whatever I could get my hands on...read more

Blackwork Fans – This Looks Fun!

Amazon Books

Tanja Berlin’s got something fun going on on her website, and if you love blackwork (or even if you love the idea of it, but haven’t tried it yet), you might want to take a look!

Blackwork Mini Mystery Project Tanja Berlin

This is Tanja’s Blackwork Mini Mystery Project. Each month for three months, starting in February, Tanja is posting a new section of this Blackwork Mini Mystery Project on her website. The section for February is already posted. Each part of the project is presented in PDF format for downloading and printing from your computer, and it’s not just the chart that she’s giving you – it’s an amazingly thorough, step-by-step instructional packet that will not only guarantee your success in completing this particular project, but will teach you the ins and outs of blackwork embroidery.

The design so far is perfect for this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere. Flowers, bunnies, wee mice, birds, and bees – all harbingers of spring, and perfect to work up right before Easter springs upon us in April.

It looks like a fun project, perfect for some relaxing and learning! If you’re keen to join in, visit the Blackwork Mini Mystery Project on the Berlin Embroidery website, and then sign up for Tanja’s mailing list on her home page, so that you can receive notification of the next installment.

Tomorrow, I’ve got another Medallion Update for you. Not much of one, I’m afraid – unless I get some serious stitching in today! And Monday, I’ll be reviewing a whopper of a book that anyone interested in the history of embroidery needs to read (followed, of course, by a give-away). I’ve also got some comparison / tutorials in the works for next week – just some little tips that you might find helpful, or that might answer some stitchery questions that you’ve faced before. We’re also starting the first week of the Nesting Place online class next week, so it promises to be a busy week all around!

Have a terrific Friday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  2. Ohh… now I am so enthusiast! I am just working on my first blackwork project and started too ambitious. I will finish it, but something easier in the technique will be a welcome change when I am done!

  3. Thanks for the recommendation to Tanja’s site. Not that I need another project right now, but I do enjoy blackwork – I may do mine in another color, just for a change. Looking forward to your book review too, it sounds right up my alley!

  4. That is an amazing set of instructions she’s provided. I adore blackwork because it’s quick to work up but looks so delicate and complicated. She has spelled out exactly how to stitch each bit of the design to make it even easier. I’ll be doing this one for sure. Thank you for letting us know.

  5. I really appreciate this…I haven’t been that interested in blackwork to this point, but like Jesslin, I might be interested in the instructions and just using a different color. Thanks again, Mary!

  6. Thanks. I had visited Tanja’s site for something else and glossed right over the black work project. Needless to say, I went back, took another look, and then shopped for supplies.

  7. oh my…I truly adore blackwork – and I think I know what this is going to be! Not a flap for a purse – but a cover of an entirely different type. And I’ll say no more now, lest I make a fool of myself in public.
