I learned to embroider when I was a kid, when everyone was really into cross stitch (remember the '80s?). Eventually, I migrated to surface embroidery, teaching myself with whatever I could get my hands on...read more

F is for Fish, Embroidered

Amazon Books

It’s a rather wet start to the week here in Kansas!

In fact, it’s a perfect day to continue our Alphabetic Meanderings through the depths of the Needle ‘n Thread archives.

Today, F is for Fish – fish of the embroidered type, and specifically, the Blackwork Fish. It has been eons since this project was alive on the website!

The Blackwork Fish

The Blackwork Fish was a strangely fun and satisfying project that I worked back in 2010.

You can read all about it, and follow it from start to finish, by visiting the Blackwork Fish Project Index here.

Scouring my memory – which has seen a few other projects since then – I think the whole project started out as a test for a set of black silk threads that I had on hand.

And it morphed into a large fish.

The Blackwork Fish

It was fun!

The embroidery was free-style in the true sense of the word. I had only the barest outlines of the fish on the fabric. I made no decisions about stitches until I was actually stitching them.

Sometimes, I’m surprised it came out looking like a fish.

I’ve always wanted to revisit this type of project – maybe not a fish, maybe not just in black.

Will I ever do it? Hmmmm…. I don’t know!

But if I do, you’ll be the first to find out!

Happy Monday!
