Mary Corbet

writer and founder

I learned to embroider when I was a kid, when everyone was really into cross stitch (remember the '80s?). Eventually, I migrated to surface embroidery, teaching myself with whatever I could get my hands on...read more

Virtual Lecture – Q&A on All Things Embroidery

Amazon Books

Wow. That was a cold weekend. I hope all who were affected by the winter storm this weekend came through it unscathed.

It’s still a bit chilly here – and we’re in recovery mode again, cleaning up sidewalks and whatnot. I’m pretty sure we will eventually have a “normal” week in 2026, but I’m guessing this isn’t going to be It.

Today, just a public service announcement. A while back, I mentioned the Virtual Lecture Series that the EGA (Embroiderers’ Guild of America) hosts online every month. I’d like to mention it again…

EGA Virtual Lecture with Mary Corbet on all things Needle 'n Thread

For those who are interested, this April, I’m participating in the very same Virtual Lecture series. I’ll be chatting with the folks at the EGA, answering questions from those who have registered for the lecture. It’s a Question & Answer event, rather than a typical lecture on a topic. Basically, the way it works is this: you register for the event, and then, before it takes place, you’ll receive an email that will allow you to submit questions. And we will discuss the questions that come in.

I’m sure it will be spontaneous and fun!

If you’d like to read more about the lecture – which takes place April 18 – you’ll find more information here, where you can also register. The whole thing is done online via zoom. It’s very easy to access, even if you’re not a Techy Person.

I hope to see you there!

EGA Membership

Did you know you can become a member of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, without having a local guild chapter nearby? I’m a “Member at Large” because I don’t have a nearby chapter. As a M-A-L, I still have most of the advantages of being a member, including the ability to sign up for learning opportunities (online and in person), access to their library, access to online projects, and a subscription to their magazine. You can read about the different memberships on the EGA website, if this is something that interests you. I’ve always found it worthwhile to be a member.

And now, back to the shovel and the Ice Melt.

Happy Monday!

  1. EGA also has an online chapter, CyberStitchers, Mary. I’ve been a member of the chapter for a while and it is a great group – friendly, lots of help, access to EGA’s Group Correspondence Courses, and more. You can find chapter information at https://cyberstitchers.org/. I highly recommend this for those who do not have a local chapter or find it hard to get to chapter meetings around other commitments.

  2. Besides being a MAl of EGA, there is the CyberStitchers chapter which is a full regular chapter. (Full disclosure, I am their membership chair). You can be both a member of a F2F chapter and a CyberStitcher. Technically, if you are a MAL and join CyberStitchers, you are no longer a MAL by definition, but I have learned that that is not necessarily enforced. Anyone who joins CyberStitchers and belongs to another chapter does not have to pay the national portion of dues again, only the chapter dues and possibly the regional promotion, depending on where she/he lives.

We have close to 200 members, about half of whom are plural members, and it is a very supportive and active group which operates by email. Your site is often referenced. If someone wants to try us out, they can be a guest at no charge for 30 days. I would appreciate it if you would mention that when you talk about joining EGA!

  3. I would like to piggyback on your comment about joining EGA without a local chapter nearby. The CyberStitchers chapter ( https://cyberstitchers.org/ ) is open to everyone (worldwide!), has a robust online chat and offers numerous GCC’s (group correspondence courses) throughout the year. A really great chapter to belong to!
