I learned to embroider when I was a kid, when everyone was really into cross stitch (remember the '80s?). Eventually, I migrated to surface embroidery, teaching myself with whatever I could get my hands on...read more

Miniature Stitching, Slow Progress

Amazon Books

The miniature embroidery project I’ve been working on as my “15 Minute” project is chugging – and I mean, barely chugging – along right now. Part of the reason is that I’ve been working on other projects, specifically some samples for my Needle Arts class (more about that later).

But, Little Progress beats No Progress. Here’s where I am at this point on this miniature tapestry, designed after the Sense of Hearing tapestry at the Cluny Museum. This miniature project is available through MicroStitchery, if your curious about the source!

Update, 2018: While MicroStitchery is still online, they are no longer honoring orders. I have heard from many folks who have placed orders with them, but have never received the orders and had to apply to PayPal for a refund. I’ve tried to contact Joy, the lady who took over the business, but with no luck. Just a word of caution, for those looking for miniature tapestries!

Miniature Embroidery Project: Cluny Tapestry

That’s the latest bit of stitchery. It doesn’t look like much, does it? You know why? Because it isn’t much!

This is the previous update I posted last week:

Miniature Embroidery Project: Cluny Tapestry

In comparing the two, you can see that I only accomplished the rest of the foliage to the right of the banner, plus the background stitching there. Even with only this little bit done, though, you can get a good idea of the lush leafery around the banner. (Leafery probably isn’t a word. But it’s Saturday. And besides, Shakespeare made up words all the time…)

So there we are. The whole thing so far.

Incidentally, in case you’re wondering, see where the top of the banner is there? The design only goes about half an inch beyond that stitching. When I think about that, I get excited! I realize it’s more finished than not finished, thanks to short bursts of stitching when I could grab time. Hey, that’s encouraging! And just thinking about that makes me start planning out where I can squeeze 15 more minutes or so out of the day, to make faster progress. Yep, needlework is a great carrot!

Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Still … great progress Mary! Your plate is so full of projects and your time is so limited that it’s a wonder you were able to put in some stitches.

I love the banner and the “leafery” … and glad to meet an other word maker upper 🙂

  2. I did not know that “leafery” wasn’t a word until you pointed it out! Hey, if “feathery” is a word, well, leafery should be, too.
The thing I don’t “get” with the 15 Minute Plan is, how do you stop yourself once the bell goes off? I mean, it’s one thing to squeeze in the needle-time, but stopping after a burst can’t be easy…?

  3. Mary, this is just so wonderful. I love seeing the progress on this tiny little piece. It’s a wonder you haven’t gone blind trying to stitch on this little wonder. Thank you so much for sharing. It almost (just almost) makes me want to try one.
